UN chief encourages trilateral mechanism to solve political crisis in Sudan

United Nations | Xinhua | UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes trilateral efforts to find a solution to the political crisis in Sudan, a UN spokesman said on Monday.

“The secretary-general welcomes the efforts of the trilateral mechanism consisting of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), the African Union Commission and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Secretariat to facilitate a solution to the political crisis in Sudan,” said Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for Guterres.

The appeal comes as Sudanese stakeholders prepare to engage in direct talks. The UN chief encourages the mechanism to participate in good faith and continue to work toward establishing a conducive environment for a constructive dialogue in the interests of the Sudanese people, Dujarric said.

“The secretary-general condemns all calls for violence and reiterates the importance of a peaceful atmosphere for the talks to be successful. He is also concerned about attempts to undermine the efforts of the trilateral mechanism and its envoys,” said the spokesman.

Guterres said that all forms of hate speech represent an attack on tolerance, undermine social cohesion and can lay the foundation for violence, setting back the cause of peace.

Guterres reaffirmed his strong support for the work of UNITAMS, as it continues to support the Sudanese aspirations for democracy, peace and prosperity, said the spokesman.

In October 2021, a military coup touched off protests that turned deadly and a state of emergency was imposed. The civilian prime minister, Abdalla Hamdok, quit in January 2022, thrusting the country into a political crisis. Hate speech between ethnic groups reportedly led to violent clashes earlier this year. The state of emergency was lifted last week.
