Uganda’s Opio nominated for Writers Guild of America award

Ugandan comedian Joseph Opio has been nominated for a major American award. Opio, who is on Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show support team, is nominated for the 2017 Writers Guild of America award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy.

Dear Joe, Congratulations. On behalf of the union, it’s my pleasure to tell you that you have been nominated for a Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy/Variety—Talk Series,” Michael Winship, President of the Writers Guild of America – East, wrote in a letter to Opio.

“You join a distinguished list of writers recognized by their peers for creativity and craft.”  The 68th Annual Writers Guild of America Awards will be held on February 19, 2017.

Opio, a lawyer, accountant and journalist, worked with Vision Group between 2006-2013 – the sports desk, radio and television before joining Trevor Noah’s team.
