Two killed in Kigezi over domestic wrangles

Rukungiri, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kigezi police are investigating the murder of two people in separate incidents by their family members. The first incident occurred in Rwesigiro village, Kikarara parish, Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district at around 10pm on Saturday where 33-year-old Pius Tugumisirize met his death at the hands of his wife and children.

Tugumisirize reportedly developed a quarrel with his wife Ruth Owakubariho, which resulted in a fight. Tugumisirize assaulted Owakubariho with a hoe leaving her unconscious. He fled into hiding in Queen Elizabeth National Park after realizing that Owakubariho was bleeding profusely.

His ten-year-old son followed him to his hideout and assaulted him with the same hoe on the head. Tugumisirize was later found unconscious and rushed to Kirarara clinic while bleeding profusely. He passed on on Sunday. His son fled into hiding. Investigations are ongoing at Rukungiri police station under file number CRB 1154/2021.

Another incident happened on July 19, 2021, at Kanyeganyegye village in Kashakye parish, Kamwezi sub-county in Rukiga district when four sisters ganged up against their 61-year-old brother, Ibrahim Kato Mugwanya.

The deceased’s neighbour, Wallen Karakure, says that Mugwanya found his sisters digging on their family land. Karakure says that Mugwanya chased them away arguing that they are not supposed to utilize the land because it was not given to them by their late parents. A fight erupted and in the process, Mugwanya was hit with a hoe on the forehead and waist.

He was rushed to Nyakihanga Church of Uganda health center II for treatment but died on Sunday morning.  The police are investigating the incident at Rukiga police station under file number CRB 359/2021. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson says that they have already arrested Owakubariho who is locked up at Rukungiri police station.

Maate also says that they have arrested one of  Mugwanya’s sisters and the search for the remaining three is ongoing.
