Spiro joins Rwenzori Marathon to promote green mobility

Wekesa joined hundreds of riders Friday at the launch of the partnership

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Spiro Uganda has partnered with the Rwenzori Marathon as the event’s official Green Mobility Partner for 2026, strengthening efforts to promote cleaner transport and environmental sustainability through sport.

The partnership has officially been sealed in Kampala through a Green Boda Boda ride involving more than 200 Spiro electric motorcycle riders, who took to the streets to promote the use of electric mobility as an alternative to fossil-fuel-powered transport.

Under the partnership, Spiro electric motorcycles will be deployed during the Rwenzori Marathon to transport and support key officials, including journalists and members of the medical team, while demonstrating how clean mobility can contribute to a healthier environment for athletes and communities.

Amos Wekesa, co-founder of the Rwenzori Marathon, said the partnership reflects the event’s broader connection between personal health and environmental health.

“The Rwenzori Marathon is one of the world’s unique sports, where we have people running across the equator,” Wekesa said, adding that the partnership goes beyond the sporting event to promote clean and green transport.

“We are proud to have Spiro on board as our green mobility partner, promoting green and clean transport in the marathon,” he said.

The marathon, which is associated with the Rwenzori region, provides a platform for the partners to link healthy lifestyles with the need for cleaner communities and reduced pollution.

Bruce Mucunguzi, Deputy Country Head of Spiro Uganda, said the company’s participation was intended to demonstrate the role electric mobility can play in creating healthier communities while protecting the environment.

“As an electric mobility solutions provider, we believe that a healthy population starts with a healthy environment. There is an urgent need to embrace clean transport, and Spiro is taking the message of clean mobility to the heart of Kasese and leading the green race,” Mucunguzi said.

He said the initiative would also highlight the need to protect the region’s natural beauty from carbon emissions, arguing that active lifestyles should be accompanied by clean air and safe public spaces.

“Embracing an active lifestyle goes hand in hand with living in a clean and healthy environment, requiring clean air, safe spaces and communities free from unnecessary pollution,” Mucunguzi added.

The partnership comes as Uganda’s urban areas experience growing demand for transport and increasing numbers of motorcycles and other vehicles on the roads, placing greater emphasis on cleaner and more sustainable mobility options.

Spiro says it has deployed more than 30,000 electric motorcycles on Ugandan roads and is seeking to replace fossil-fuel-powered transport with electric motorcycles supported by its battery-swapping infrastructure.

The company describes electric mobility as one practical option for reducing transport-related pollution while supporting cleaner urban environments and economic opportunities in communities.

The Rwenzori Marathon partnership therefore places electric mobility within a broader conversation about public health, environmental protection and sustainable transport, using sport to reach communities with the message that cleaner mobility can support both human and environmental health.

For the marathon organisers, the partnership also adds an environmental dimension to an event that already seeks to promote physical activity and the distinctive experience of running across the equator.

For Kasese and the wider Rwenzori region, where the marathon will take place, the partnership is expected to place greater attention on the relationship between the environment, tourism, sport and sustainable transport.

Spiro officials said its wider goal is to accelerate access to affordable and clean energy while contributing to economic empowerment through electric mobility and battery-swapping infrastructure.
