Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has announced that the elections for the Local Council 1 leaders will be held in January 2017.
The structures for the Local Council 1 have not been in place legally for more than a decade. Rugunda said the government has secured funds for organising the polls adding that the expiry of contracts for most Electoral Commission officers will not affect the process.
Uganda has not had legally established LC 1 structures after a successful petition to the Constitution Court by then opposition firebrand Rubaramira Ruranga on the way LC1 polls were conducted.
Rubaramira argued that LC polls were not in tandem with a multiparty political dispensation.
