Rtd Judge Kanyeihamba wants corrupt judges out

By Aloysious Kasoma

Former Supreme court Judge George Kanyeihamba wants all the corrupt judges out of the judiciary and advised has the government to investigate any judges suspected of involvement in this act.

Kanyeihamba said that when accusations are made on public officials, investigations should be carried out immediately instead of protecting them.

“Several judges have been named in corruption scandals and there is evidence in writing but there are still working” he said during the launch of the report “The right to fair trial in Uganda” by Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) in Kampala.

Kanyeihamba said that the corrupt official is worse than an empty chair.

Justice Yorokamu Bamwine the Principal Judge and the guest of honor commended the FHRI and the judiciary and highlighted cases where the judiciary has been able to improve since 2008.

He said the disposal of cases has increased from 12% in 2009 to 48% in 2012 while disposal of cases against registered cases is 144% in 2012.

Bamwine said that the performance has led to a complete elimination of criminal case backlog at Magistrate’s Court level.

He said that the congestion in prisons reduced from 500% in 2005 t0 214% in 2011 while the crime rate reduced from 502 persons per 100,000 in 2007 to 302 persons per 100,000 in 2012 making Uganda one of the countries with the lowest crime rate in the world among others.

He urged FHRI to widely disseminate the findings to all other parts of the country as this will raise awareness particularly amongst members of the judiciary, the legal fraternity and other stakeholders.
