Prof. Mamdani appointed Kampala International University chancellor

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Professor Mahmood Mamdani is new the Chancellor of Kansanga based Kampala International University-KIU.

The University Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo confirmed the development saying the decorated academician is coming with a lot to add on the “leading private university”.

He says there is no doubt that the appointment of Prof. Mamdani is meritorious and well-deserving, adding that having him at the helm of the university will help them explore the heights as their motto states.

A chancellor is the titular head of a University and carries out ceremonial and official functions such as conferring degrees and other academic titles and distinctions.

Mamdani, who was recently appointed a member of the Advisory Board of the United Nations Democracy Fund, will succeed Prof. John Pancras Mukasa Lubowa Ssebuwufu.

Who Is Prof. Mamdani? 

Born 74 years ago, Mahmood Mamdani is a Ugandan of Indian descent. He is a celebrated academic, author, and political commentator.

Mamdani specializes in the study of African and international politics, colonialism and post‐colonialism and the politics of knowledge production.

Previously, he has worked as Director of African Studies at the Institute of African Studies, Columbia University, Executive Director, centre for Basic Research, Kampala and a teaching fellow at the Harvard University.

He is currently the Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University.
