Ogwang shares lead with Kitata, Nigerian Okoko at POA tour series

Entebbe, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | Entebbe Club’s Emma Ogwang was one of three golfers to have a near-perfect start on Day 1 of the Pearl of Africa Sunshine Development tour in Entebbe today to share the lead with countryman Willy Kitata and Nigerian Godwin Okoko.

“The early morning rain was a blessing in disguise to me and made the greens move fast as my balls were rolling,” said Ogwang, who is also the Uganda Professional Golfers Association captain.

Ogwang returned to the clubhouse with a score of 5 under par 66 with 6 birdies, 1 bogey on hole 15 and 11 pars.

Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko, who finished runner at the recent Uganda Open also had a 5 under par 66 with 5 birdies and 13 pars.

South Africa’s Ruan De Smidt, winner of the Pro Am, and Uganda Pro Open winner Ronald Rugumayo are tied for fourth with 4 under par 67 while South African Slade Pickering and Deo Akope are tied for sixth with 3 under par 68.

Today’s action was delayed for 1 hour due to the early morning rain.

The tournament is a Sunshine Development tour and the first Official World Golf Ranking tournament held in the country.
