Nakaseke residents foil robbery on mobile money shop

Nakaseke, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Nakaseke has arrested two men after they attempted to rob a mobile money shop.

The suspects have been identified as Stuart Taremwa and the other only identified as Duncan. They attacked Viola Nakigudde in her shop on Thursday at Butikwa cell in Kiwoko town council.  They are reported to have been armed with machetes.

On being attacked by the robbers, Nakigudde raised an alarm that attracted several rescuers and the robbers aborted. The suspects swiftly took to their heels, but the growing crowd responding to the alarm managed to surround them and started beating them up. The two were rescued by police from the angry mob that had moved to lynch them.

Savannah regional police spokesperson Issah Ssemwogerere confirms the attempted robbery and arrest of the suspects.

In Mid-July this year, gunfire rocked Kasiiso trading centre in Butuntumula sub county, as gunmen robbed at gunpoint a mobile money shop belonging to Patrick Ssemwasi at around 7:45pm as he was planning to close at curfew time.

Police said the robbers were armed with a sub machine gun (SMG) and a pistol. They made off with two million shillings and 36 mobile phones.

A week before, the robbers raided Kiwanula trading centre and fired live bullets before robbing a mobile money shop belonging to Luwero district councilor for Kamira sub-county David Kalungi.

They disappeared with cash and float on mobile money worth 5.5 million shillings. They also robbed 33 mobile phones and phone accessories before they jumped onto their motorcycle and sped off.

According to the Police Crime report for 2020, six people were killed and six others injured in robberies from 2020 to the end of January 2021 in greater Luwero.

The criminal gangs committed 20 crimes, robbed 23 million shillings, 243 mobile phones, one motorcycle and a pistol.

The crimes were committed in Bombo, Kikyusa, Migeera, Wobulenzi town councils, Luwero and Nakasongola districts.
