Museveni to respond to Election Petition in 3 days

President Yoweri Museveni Thursday received the election petition challenging his re-election.

In two tweets, Museveni shared photographs on social media about the brief meeting with candidate Amama Mbabazi’s lawyers Severino Twinobusingye and Akampurira in which he acknowledged receipt of the petition filed on March 1.

“I received a petition from lawyers representing my young brother Amama Mbabazi challenging my re-election. I will respond in the legally-mandated 3 days.We restored rule of law and will ensure it is observed to the letter.”

The respondents named in the petition are president-elect Museveni who was declared winner with 60.75 of votes cast, the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Attorney General (AG).

One of NRM’s lead lawyers Kiryowa Kiwanuka soon after captioned the same photo on social media, saying “President Museveni acknowledging receipt of the petition”, adding the hashtag “ComplianceNotDefiance”

Mbabazi listed 28 Grounds in the Petition to the Supreme Court, that will start preliminary hearings on Monday.

The petition concluded that, “your Petitioner prays that this Honourable Court declares”

(a) That Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was not validly elected as President.

(b) That the election be annulled.

• The Petitioner be awarded costs of this Petition.

• The Petition is accompanied by the Petitioner’s Affidavit together with other Affidavits sworn by deponents whose names appear in a list attached hereto and marked “A” and more affidavits to be filed later.
