Bugweri, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Yoweri Museveni has challenged the armed forces to leverage modern technologies as a means of managing modern-day security situations.
Museveni noted that Africa is currently battling related security threats like terrorism and piracy, among others but hastened to add that if armed forces commit to coordinating on fighting criminality through the application of technology, the continent will be completely secure from detractors.
Museveni added that during a recent visit to Algeria, he was given samples of technology chips, which can be used in intelligence gathering and tracking of criminals. According to Museveni, such technology applications facilitate security sanity by quickening efforts of averting threats and tracking down criminals.
He added that although CCTV camera’s have been reliable in tracking down criminals, there are a few loopholes within this system, which will need to be addressed in order to intensify the fight against crime.
Museveni has tasked the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Wilson Mbadi to liaise with his counterparts from other countries and use the ever-evolving technologies to fight crime.
Meanwhile, Mbadi hailed UPDF officers for professionalism, adding that such tenets have enabled them to earn public trust in their continuous quest to promote peace and security within communities.
Mbadi added that officers have been privileged to hold buildup talks with members of the general public, most of whom are taking advantage of the prevailing peace to foster economic transformation within their respective areas of influence.
They were speaking during Tarehe Sita Celebrations which were held at Busesa grounds in Bugweri District on Tuesday. Tarehe Sita is celebrated every sixth day of February, in commemoration of the exact date when the National Resistance Army-NRA started a war to liberate Uganda.
This year’s Tarehe Sita Day was commemorated in the Busoga sub-region preceded by a facelift of dilapidated infrastructural projects, fresh construction works, medical camps, sporting activities, and general cleanliness drives, among others.
