Mukono taskforce blocks politicians from food distribution exercise

Relief food

Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mukono Covid-19 taskforce has warned politicians against being involved in the distribution of relief food.

The task force argues that the distribution exercise should be carried out by Local Defense Unit-LDU officers, army and members from the Red Cross society.

This follows reports that youths belonging to the NRM party had made it a habit to accompany food distribution teams and then praise the party for for providing support to the community.

On Saturday, a team of about 20 youths dressed in the NRM yellow shirts appeared at Mukono playground where the committee was receiving food and requested the RDC Fred Bamwine to officially be part of the distribution team.

Bamwiine notes that the habit of allowing one political party to join the food distribution exercise discourages supporters from different political parties from offering support to the district task force committee.

The Red Cross Spokesperson Irene Nakasiita notes partisan politics affects food distribution.

Over 30,000 residents have so far benefited from the food distribution program. Food has been given in by people of goodwill and others through donations received by the Red Cross Society.
