Malaysian ex-PM granted conditional pardon, to serve remainder of sentence on house arrest

KUALA LUMPUR | Xinhua |  Malaysian former Prime Minister Najib Razak has been granted a conditional pardon and will be allowed to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said on Friday.

The terms of the pardon include a 50-million-ringgit (12.2 million U.S. dollars) fine, it said in a statement.

Najib’s remaining sentence runs until Aug. 23, 2028.

He has been imprisoned since August 2022 over abuse of power related to SRC International, a former unit of the state investment fund 1MDB.

Earlier in 2024, Najib was granted a reduced sentence, which saw his 12-year sentence reduced to six years while the fine imposed on him was reduced from 210 million ringgit to 50 million ringgit. (1 ringgit equals 0.24 U.S. dollars) ■
