Kyambogo University Lecturer charged for defacing lover with acid

Kampala, Uganda | GODFREY SSALI | Kyambogo University Lecturer James Kazungu Alupo was Monday charged before Nakawa Magistrates court with the attempted murder of an alleged lover using acid.

Kazungu who teaches at the faculty of Civil Engineering also faces charges of domestic violence.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Jamson Karemani and denied the charges.

However in her evidence to court, the victim Judith Agole Dirisi has testified that after the loss of her husband in 2011, Kazungu approached her claiming to have been a best friend to her late husband, and even offered to help her with the feeding and education of her three children.

Agole who was an accountant with Africa Innovations Institute by then, now painfully moves with the support of two people.

She told Magistrate Karemani that in 2014, they started living with Kazungu at Kirinya Bweyogerere, but he failed to honor his promise, and instead engaged in extra-marital affairs.

She further told court that on the fateful day October 28, 2017, Agole opted to end the affair and moved out of the house, but Kazungu claimed to still love her and asked her for a second chance.

She says that at around mid-night, that  day, she came back home from her supermarket in Kireka and as she was   entering  the house, she realised Kazungu was behind her,  and on turning to talk to him , he poured acid on her face that disfigured it with blindness and further  injured her breast , thigh and arm.

The matter was reported to Kirinya Police Post which arrested Kazungu, who is now on bail.

This has left Agole wondering whether she is not at risk of a second acid attack if her tormenter is on the loose.

The matter was adjourned to March 26, 2018 for further hearing.
