Tooro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Tooro Kingdom has clarified on the acquisition of kingdom property by King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba.

This follows a legal notice issued by Akampurira and Partners Advocates indicating that the premises hosting Sarah Medical Clinic on Block 73 in Fort portal town was transferred from the Kingdom into the names of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru as of 21, December 2018.

According to notice, a copy of which URN has seen, the tenancy agreement between Sarah Medical Clinic and Tooro Kingdom expired in June 2019. King Oyo now wants the occupant to quit the premises this month.

The Kingdom Spokesperson, Charles Mwanguhya Mpagi told URN that since the national constitution guarantees the right of all Ugandans to own property, the same constitution doesn’t dictate from whom and who can acquire such property.

According to Mwanguhya, it is not against any laws of the land for the king to acquire property provided the right procedure is followed.

In a statement issued by the Kingdom, the responsibility to allocate land leases is vested in the Kingdom Land Board and it’s on this basis that King Oyo in his private capacity as a citizen applied for and was allocated the property in question.

“Tooro Kingdom is a major owner of land around Fort portal and Uganda and has encouraged subjects to get leases on land they occupy or wish to occupy,” the statement reads in part. It is claimed that King Oyo intends to set up a specialised health facility on the same property.
