Kanungu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT  |  Fear and grief grip Kiruruma Sand Mind in Nyakinoni Sub County this morning after another man died at a sand mine that was just re-opening illegally after 2 weeks of closure due to similar incidents.

According to residents, the deceased was identified as Turyamuhebwa Hannington, a son of Rutagasa a resident of Buhumuriro Cell in Nyakinoni Sub County.

The incident comes barely 24 hours after Kanungu District Security Committee issued conditions for reopening the sand mine and put in place a committee to enforce the strict guidelines that were put in place.

The Kanungu District Resident Commissioner Hajji Shaffiq Ssekandi Sengoba confirmed the incident to our reporter, saying that Turyamuhebwa had died in illegal sand mining.

According to the RDC, the District security and environment Committees held a meeting with the miners and agreed that none of them should dare go to the mines before the excavators level the hanging cliffs.

Ssekandi added that it’s quite unfortunate that even after they have oriented these people on what to do, others have shameless disregarded their guidelines and advice.

“I attribute the current incidents to the high demand of Katete and Kiruruma sand in the district and beyond, people from different corners of the region rush to get this high quality sand which attracts miners to flood the quarries,” he said.
