Joint medical stores loses equipment worth UGX 7bn in fire

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT  |  The Joint Medical Stores –JMS has lost medical equipment worth 7 Billion Shillings in a fire that gutted several warehouses. 

On Friday, fire gutted warehouses belonging to Madhvani Group of Companies located at the 5th Street Industrial Area.  

The fire is believed to have started from a neighbouring warehouse where some people were welding.

The Executive Director Joint Medical Stores Bildard Baguma said they lost equipment that includes ICU beds and medicines. According to Baguma, they are yet to establish the specific figure but explains that the money could go to 7 Billion Shillings worth of equipment and medicines. 

Joseph Mugisa, the Director of Fire Prevention and Rescue Services say that they struggled to access warehouses. He says that there was no space left for the fire brigade to put off the fire. 

The other warehouses that were gutted by fire were being used by Keshwala Group Distributors, Sawan Distributors and AJP Printing Services, Star Pharmaceuticals Limited, and Mi-Tech Electronics.
