Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A huge field from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sweden, Burundi and Rwanda is expected as the 2023 Uganda Ladies Open Golf Championship tees off Thursday at the pristine Uganda Golf Club par 72 course. With many parts of the course flooded today, the different playing surface could well determine the winner of this year’s edition.

Martha Babirye, who has won the country’s  most prestigious Ladies Golf tournament 3 times 2019,2020 and 2022 is favourite to press for a record fourth title despite the big foreign challenge this time.

“Am ready for the tournament. I am more focused for this, it’s important for me to win it again,” Babirye said.

Babirye, will have to keep a close eye on the other favorites that include Peace Amooti Kabasweka, UGC Ladies Open Champion Eva Magala, Judith Komugisha, Melon Kyomugisha and the Tanzanian duo of Iddi Madina and Tz Ladies Open Champion Vicky Elias together with Kenya’s Martha Nyanchama.

The Legendary Alice Kego, holds the record with the most wins -12,  with Flavia Namakula at 5 wins

The tournament’s main sponsor is Uganda Breweries Limited under there luxury brand Johnnie Walker. Other sponsors are Absa Bank Uganda, Orchard Interiors, NBS Sports Pinnacle Security, Crown Beverages, Case Medical Service, HTC Hub, NCS, Royal and Ancient.
