How to validate and transfer a vehicle in Uganda

Motoring | THE INDEPENDENT | Validation of motor vehicles is a process where a taxpayer captures details of the old log book into the URA online motor vehicle register to acquire a new E-log book.

From 2020, you will need to validate your logbook to be able to pay third party insurance for the vehicle or motor bike you have. You cannot also transfer the car to another party without validation, which is all done online for free. Transfer fees however remain sh84,000 only.

The Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority has also outlined how to pay for third party using a phone.

For Airtel Money
One: Dial *185# and choose option 4>Payment

Two: Select Option 7 for Financial services

Three: Select Option 6 for insurance

Four: Select Option 1 for Motor 3rd Party

Five: Enter your vehicle/motor-bike registration number

Six: Choose Option 1 to confirm the transaction

Seven: Enter your Airtel money PIN to confirm the transaction.

For MTN Mobile Money
One: Dial *165# and choose option 4>Payment

Two: Select Option 5 for Fees and Taxes

Three: Select Option 5-Motor 3rd Party

Four: Enter your vehicle/motor-bike registration number

Five: The vehicle details and amount due will show up next.

Six: Enter your mobile money PIN to confirm the transaction and the sticker reference number will be sent to you via SMS.

Seven: Write the reference number on your Insurance sticker on your motor and that’s it.
