Entebbe, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | The fast-growing Pearl of Africa Golf Series (POA) has been given a world ranking status by the Sunshine Development Tour. The partnership marks a historic first for Ugandan golf.
This year’s event will be held at the Lakeside, Entebbe Club, from September 16 to 19. The POA tour organisers announced the new partners and status at a press conference held yesterday at the venue of the next stop of the tour.
“The tournament will be graced by some of the best players in Africa, and therefore, we expect a competitive championship,” Lucas Kyle, a representative from the Sunshine Tour said at the launch.
The POA Golf Series becomes the country’s inaugural professional tour to receive original world golf ranking status under the Sunshine Development and Bet Tour.
“The POA Series being part of the Sunshine Development Tour is a big milestone to the golf fraternity in Uganda. This is an extraordinary resurgence of the game in the country and the region,” Paul Rukundo, the Uganda Golf Union Vice President, stated at the launch.
The total prize money for the 4-day tour is 70 million.
Golfers from Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana are expected to take part in this tour.
The other support sponsors for the tour include Uganda Tourism Board, Exim Bank, Vivo Energy, Afromania, Aquafina and Case Hospital.
