BERLIN | TASS | The majority of Bundestag MPs voted against a new resolution of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union bloc, demanding that Germany send Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

As many as 495 parliamentarians out of 690 present voted to reject the resolution, 190 voted in its favor and five more abstained. The meeting was broadcast by local TV channels.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly rejected the idea of sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine. According to him, the effective use of these missiles requires the involvement of German military personnel, and this is precisely the line he does not want to cross.

The CDU/CSU reproached the chancellor for allegedly “telling a lie” and “playing on the Germans’ fears.” Most of the parliamentarians speaking at the Thursday’s meeting sided with Scholtz. Words of approval came from both the Left Party and the right-wing Alternative for Germany.

Germany’s Social Democratic Party, of which Scholz is a member, said the chancellor “is ensuring national security while at the same time supporting Ukraine and does not deserve insults” from the opposition. “Please accept it as a given and do not believe those who appear on talk shows saying they know best,” said Rolf Mutzenich, head of the SPD parliamentary faction.
