Flying start for Kabasweka at Uganda Ladies Golf Open

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Peace Amooti Kabasweka’s took advantage of great putting on Thursday, to storm to a five stroke lead on day one of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Open Golf Championship at UGC Kitante.

“My putting was key and my putter was on fire today,” Kabasweka said after her stunning score of 68, four under par. “Everything for me was perfect today and I hope to maintain this trend tomorrow.”

Kabasweka, the Lady Captain of Toro Club, has never claimed the biggest prize on the Ladies golf calendar, but will now be the player to watch over the next two days.

Tanzania’s Iddi Madina Hussein, is still within striking distance after getting a feel of the new course. She is 5 strokes off the pace with 1 over par 73.

“Today’s round was not easy on the course after yesterday’s rain it but am glad with my game today though I missed a few short putts on the course,” Hussein said. “I believe I can do better tomorrow and improve on my game.”

Three time winner Martha Babirye of Uganda is 9 over par 81. “Today everything just didn’t work out for me I was just not lucky,” Babirye said. “I remain positive and just need to get my putting right.”

The Bronze category and Seniors join the action Friday.

The tournament has attracted lady golfers from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Sweden and China.
The tournament is sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited under there brand Johnnie Walker. Other co sponsors are Absa Bank Uganda, HTC Hub, Crown Beverages, Pinnacle Security Limited, HK Properties, Medisell, Case Medical Services, NBS Sport.
