Court orders Uganda’s NBS to pay sh260m damages to Terry Kahuma

Terry Kahuma

The High Court in Kampala has ordered the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to  pay its former Executive Director Terry Kahuma sh260 million as damages for wrongful dismissal.

Justice Lydia Mugambe also ordered UNBS to pay him costs, basing on the senior position Kahuma held for 10 years, on top of being a PHD holder plus the embarrassment and inconvenience he suffered as a result of his termination.

Justice Mugambe ruled that Kahuma was condemned unheard by a Commission of Inquiry that was setup to investigate his alleged mismanagement of UNBS.

The Judge observed that Kahuma was never given an opportunity to understand the actual accusations against him, face his accusers or defend himself.

Justice Mugambe then quashed the findings of the commission based on the violation of Kahuma’s right to a fair hearing.

Kahuma who is currently the Dean- Faculty of Science and Technology at Victoria University filed the case in 2012 against UNBS and the Attorney General.
