Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Grace Akullo, the Director of Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID has dispatched a team of investigators to probe the root cause of the resurgence of the mysterious killings in greater Masaka areas.

The latest victim of the mysterious killings is sixty-year-old Anent Nampijja Muwangaza, a resident of Kasaali village Bisanje Parish, Kabonera division in Masaka city. Unknown assailants butchered the deceased at around 7:50 pm on Wednesday while moving from the kitchen to the main house.

Nampijja became the fifth person to be killed in five days and 19th in just under two months. Now, Charles Twine, the CID Spokesperson says that on top of heightened police deployment to curb the vice, the CID boss has dispatched a team of investigators to probe the cause of the killings.

The attacks in greater Masaka area bring back ugly memories of machete-wielding thugs that dominated the region in 2017 and 2018, where dozens of residents lost their lives in unexplained attacks. The attackers would send prior notices and warnings of their planned attack on their victims.

This prompted the then Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura to pitch camp in the area for several days to command joint security operations leading to a crackdown on the notorious gang coordinated by Musa Ggaliwango and Mohammed Kiddawalime, who was killed by a mob in Bukulula trading center in Kalungu district during a botched robbery.

Twine says the recent attacks are driven by land conflicts, domestic violence, witchcraft and isolated cases of robberies. He notes that they have identified 4 cases that look to be the work of organised criminals.

“We have so far identified and arrested some suspects and are still hunting others. The arrested suspects have been connected to the scenes of crime and they have made confessions, but we want to execute investigations based on science so that our people in greater Masaka can enjoy peace,” Twine said.
