Busia Municipality installs security lights to curb crime

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Busia Municipal council authority has installed solar security lights in the town in a drive aimed at reducing crime.

The lights have been installed along with areas that have been rendered dangerous. The Municipal Council said they want to reduce the rampant cases of theft, killing of motorcycle boda-boda riders and rape among others in the area.

The areas were the lights have been installed include; Madibira junction, Hadongole road, Nnagwe Mugungu junction, Nangwe shops market, Dabani road, Mawero market streets which is along Tororo road among many others all in Busia Municipality.

Hassan Bwire Opio, the mayor Busia Municipality says they installed over 17 security solar lights worth shs140 million. He says they will continue with the program to ensure that almost the whole area has lights.

George Barasa, the chairman of Busia Municipality LCI chairpersons says the installation will reduce on criminal cases in the municipality.

The chairman LCI Nangwe Mugungu, Godfrey Beneza says the dark corners were a security threat in the area and mostly affected motorcycle riders.

Ogoola Twaha, the chairman Madibira B village also added that they had failed to control the rampant criminal cases of theft and killings in the area because of the darkness in some areas. He wants the remaining areas of Sibarara where there are cases of rape to also have security lights installed.

Joseph Ojambo, the chairman Busia joint motorcycle boda-boda Riders Association says at least three cases of motorcycle theft are registered per month where riders are killed.   He is hopeful that the installation of the lights will help to reduce these cases.

Steven Muhoozi, the Busia district traffic officer says they have endeavoured to carry out sensitization drives to boda-boda riders not to ride at night because of the darkness in the town.
