Buganda introduces electronic card to tackle land fraud

Mayiga at Bulange.

Buganda Land Board, the body that manages land under Buganda Kingdom has introduced an electronic land electronic card system aimed at cutting down crimes related to land.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative on Feb.25, ICT Minister Frank Tumwebaze said use of the card will make transactions secure as it uses biometric palm vein technology that links tenant identities to their land records.

This innovation however comes at the time when many areas of Buganda are riddled with land conflicts which have forced several government bodies to step in to solve the land question. On Feb.24 for instance the Land Ministry held a meeting with legislators from Buganda region to plan how to stop evictions and grabbing that are rampant in the region.
