A pupil leaves a dilapidated classroom block at Teboke Primary

Apac, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Arocha Primary School, in Central Ward, Akere Division in Apac Municipality is seeking 200 Million Shillings to rehabilitate classrooms.

The school with more than 2,000 pupils has classroom blocks that are dilapidated with a leaking roof, broken ceiling boards and sinks, inadequate and non-functional toilets coupled with limited space.

However, since its establishment in 1978, it has not been renovated, forcing the school authorities to fund raise for the rehabilitation.

The school administration is now organizing various activities through which they can raise the funds. In October last year, the former pupils of the school conducted a fundraising drive and 11 Million Shillings was collected and used for renovating primary six classroom blocks.

Evelyn Gloria Aciro, the headteacher said they have chosen to renovate the classroom blocks because of the sorry state they are in. She said they received 13.5 million shillings from Friends of Goodwill, an NGO based in Denmark, to commence the project.

Apio said the school currently has only three functional classroom blocks which cannot accommodate the overwhelming enrollment, noting that the school has a budget estimate of 200 million shillings to rehabilitate the entire school structures.

Tom Omara, the Chairperson School Management Committee said that the school is searching for over 200 million shillings for renovations. He said since the school started in 1978, it has not had major renovations.

The Apac Municipal Education Officer Faustino Opila said several schools in the area are operating on dilapidated structures that require the efforts of parents and stakeholders. He says that the government has no direct budget line to handle school rehabilitation, asking parents to join hands in rehabilitating the affected schools.
