Airtel commissions school building in Kayunga

By Aloysious Kasoma

Airtel Uganda has commissioned a second building at Ndeeba Primary School in Kayunga district under their corporate responsibility program known as adopt a school.

According to the Managing Director V.G. Somasekar, the adopt a school program is a long term initiative for under privileged schools  and involves provision of education facilities which include newly installed libraries, desks, uniforms among others.

“Airtel adopted Ndeeba Primary School, we believe that by giving education to the child you have educated the family. Year after year we invest in education and put a smile on their faces, we give back in terms of education” he said during the function which was held at the School in Kayunga.

The Minister for Education and Sports Jessica Alupo was the guest of honor and commended Airtel for working within the ministry guideline in classifying the schools for adoption.

“My ministry is very passionate about raising the profile of our primary schools and partnering with Airtel to bring our already planned vision closer than expected and we therefore highly welcome this commitment by Airtel” she said

Alupo also pointed out that the reason why school drop outs are high is because the parents and the guardians have abandoned their role and they are forcing children into child labour and early marriages. She said that the government is monitoring and encouraged children to keep going to school.

Ndeeba Primary School was started by the Church of Uganda and has a population of over 700 students , Airtel adopted it in 2010.
