33 pupils miss PLE in Mbale city

Pupils waiting to start the exams.

Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | More than 30 candidates from Namatala Primary school in Mbale city have failed to show up for the Primary Leaving Examinations-PLE.

The head Teacher, Edith Musundi, says that only 155 out of the 188 candidates registered showed up for the exams. She explains that some of the affected pupils got pregnant while others got married.

According to Musundi, they neither recieved notification from the candidates nor their parents on why they failed to show up for the examinations. “It is only one parent who brought her daughter who left school after registering until the briefing date, requesting the office to allow her to sit for her examinations, to which I consented,” Musundi said.

Martin Wabomba, a parent to one of the candidates says that his daughter got pregnant and shied away from the exams because of her condition. “She’s just there at home, I tried talking to her to sit for papers but she totally refused,” Wabomba told URN in Mbale.

Derrick Muyeye, a teacher at Namatala Primary School told Uganda Radio Network that it is the responsibility of the parents to keep their children at home and cooperate with the school administrators to ensure the pupils are monitored and mentored to be responsible for their lives. “It seems there are some parents who are not concerned about these pupils when out of school,” said Muyeye.
