20 Congolese nationals arrested for illegal entry into Uganda

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  20 Congolese nationals have been arrested in Kasese District for illegal entry into Uganda.   

Joshua Masereka the Deputy RDC Kasese says security personnel acted on a tip-off from residents in Kisanga A, Nyamwamba division in Kasese Municipality.   

Masereka adds that some of those trying to enter Uganda are escaping from the war-torn Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC.  

Masereka says security personnel have launched investigations into circumstances under which the Congolese nationals enter and settle into Uganda.  

James Muyinga owning rentals in Kisanga Kasese municipality says his wife was approached by a group of about 15 people at different intervals looking for rooms to rent.   

However, on interacting with them she discovered that they were hailing from DRC.   She informed her husband who in turn alerted the police.  

Five of them were arrested before they led police to another group that had made its way into Kasese All Saints Church.   

However, police concealed the names of the Congolese, for fear of jeopardizing investigations. 

UNHCR reports that since the start of the year to March, attacks blamed on the ADF have killed nearly 200 people, injured dozens of others, and displaced an estimated 40,000 people in DRC’s Beni Territory in North Kivu province as well as nearby villages in Ituri province.
