15 Eritrean nationals arrested for illegal entry into Uganda

Tororo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Mbale is holding 15 Eritrean nationals who were arrested in Tororo for illegally entering into the country.

The 15 Eritreans were arrested on Tuesday by personnel of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces while entering the country through porous routes.

The 15 include 11 women and 4 men. Edrin Mawanda, the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson confirmed the arrest and said that after their arrest, they were briefly held at Bugema Army Barracks before they were handed over to police in Mbale where they are currently held.

He said that they have been charged with illegal entry into the country and investigations have started to establish their motives of entering into the country.

Police both in Tororo where the Eritreans were arrested and in Mbale, where they are currently detained is yet to comment on the matter.

Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika told Uganda Radio Network that he was still gathering information about the issue.
