KIEV | Xinhua | Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday evening that he and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to meet in New York.
“This meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky wrote on X following a telephone conversation between the two leaders.
Zelensky said he and Trump discussed the visit to Ukraine by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, adding that advancing the peace process remained Kiev’s top priority.
He said they exchanged ideas on de-escalation measures and addressing fundamental security issues, including energy and food security and the protection of human lives.
Zelensky said Ukraine stands ready to continue working with the U.S. team and take “really serious steps.”
Meanwhile, Moscow said Monday that sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas exports will not revive relations with the United States or lead to peace with Ukraine.
On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Russia sanctions bill into law. The legislation targets Russia’s energy and defense industries, as well as its “shadow fleet” of tankers.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia has largely adapted to the sanctions and found ways to minimize their impact, adding that the country’s trading partners oppose such restrictions. ■
