Woman arrested for stealing baby from Mityana hospital

Mityana, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a newly born child from Mityana hospital. It is alleged that on Tuesday, Prossy Nakalanzi stole the baby boy, four hours after delivery.

Rachael Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson says that after they were informed about the theft, detectives carried out investigations leading to the arrest of Nakalanzi. Kawala said that the infant was stolen from her mother Aisha Namutebi.

She said that when the CCTV cameras in the hospital were reviewed, a search for Nakalanzi started and she was arrested from a home in Kyengeza village, Malangala sub county in Mityana district.

It is alleged that Nakalanzi, who is a resident of Kasambya village, Watuba parish in Kikandwa sub county, wanted to please her husband who has been demanding a child from her. The police said that Nakalanzi had lied to the husband that she was pregnant.

Police preffered charges of aggravated trafficking in children against Nakalanzi as investigations continue.

The police have also cautioned parents especially those at the hospitals to desist from entrusting their children with people they do not know to avoid risks of theft. Kawala advised expectant mothers to always get caretakers to take care of their newly born babies and also their property.

The Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2009 provides for the offence of Aggravated trafficking in persons.   Section 4 (a) provides for Aggravated trafficking in persons and that a person commits the offence of aggravated trafficking where the victim of trafficking is a child; commits an offence of aggravated trafficking in children and may be liable to suffer death.
