Witch doctor, five others arrested over kidnap of two children

Kagadi, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kagadi police are holding six people, among them a witch doctor on allegations of kidnapping two children. The witch doctor has been identified as Sylvester Bagonza, a resident of Kyomunembe cell in Kagadi town council, Kagadi district.

The particulars of the remaining suspects have been withheld by police for fear of jeopardizing police investigations. It is alleged that Bagonza and five other suspects planned and kidnapped two children including his own biological daughter on Monday this week with an aim of sacrificing them.

The children have been identified as Joyce Nasale, 8, a pupil at St Jude Nursery and P/s Kyenzige, the biological daughter of Bagonza, and 13-year-old Jamil Musoke, a pupil at Mayisha Kindergarten School and a son to Sowed Katongole, a boda boda rider in Kagadi town.

Kenneth Tukamushaba, the Officer in Charge of Kagadi Central Police station told Uganda Radio Network on Thursday that Bagonza placed several announcements on local radio stations in Kagadi on Monday announcing the mysterious disappearance of his daughter and also filed a complaint with police.

After placing the announcements, another child disappeared mysteriously on Tuesday from Kagadi town on his way to school. Tukumushaba says after searching for the two children in vain, residents became suspicious and raided Bagonza’s home on Wednesday evening where they found the two children tied in the house. Residents also recovered fetishes including a basin full of blood from the suspect’s bedroom.

They descended on Bagonza, beating him to near death. Police fired live bullets in the air to disperse the rowdy residents who torched the suspect’s house and fetishes. Tukamushaba says that they retrieved the minors and took them to Kagadi General Hospital for medical examination.

Musoke’s father, Katongole says that he waited for his child to return home from school on Tuesday in vain. He says that they made several radio announcements about the disappearance of their son only to find him tied up in Bagonza’s house.
