THIS WEEK: Ugandans in diaspora to be registered

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |Speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has revealed that starting next year Ugandans in Washington, Nordic Countries and United Kingdom will start being registered for dual citizenship. Speaking during the Uganda – UK Convention held in London on Sept.16, Kadaga said registration centers will be in operation by April and that there will be a portal for those who prefer on-line registration. This comes amidst complaints by Ugandans living in the United Kingdom that they are facing challenges in registering for dual citizenship that they have to travel all the way to Uganda to have themselves registered.

Kadaga who said one will be required to pay a one-off fee of US $400 to register added that on acquisition of dual citizenship certificates Ugandans would also be in position to get their national identity cards immediately.

Ugandans with German citizenship would not be in position to get Ugandan citizenship because the German law does not allow for the same.
