THIS WEEK: FDC supporters accused of holding unlawful assemblies freed

56 supporters of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change Party – FDC were arrested on July 19 and released two days later. The group had been detained at Nalufenya—a police facility recently branded torture chambers for allegedly holding unlawful assemblies. They were however on July 21 transferred from the facility in a heavily guarded police bus after party activists including Ingrid Turinawe visited the facility but were blocked from accessing them.

The suspects who were arrested from different areas in Kyaddondo East Constituency were delivered and detained at Kasangati police station before being released on police bond.

Police said the group was arrested after finding them with banners, t-shirts and other materials that allegedly had messages of defiance and a campaign to sensitise people about the proposed of amendment of article 102 of the constitution to lift the presidential age-limit.
