THIS WEEK: Ex Minister Byandala has a case to answer

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Former works minister Ibrahim Byandala has been for a year battling cases to do with embezzlement at the anti-corruption court in Kampala. On Oct.02, the Inspectorate of Government’s Director of Legal Affairs Sarah Birungi maintained that the minister together with six colleagues have a case to answer over the embezzlement of Shs24.7b from government. The money which was diverted was meant to upgrade Mukono-Katosi road from gravel to bitumen standard.

Birungi submitted that Byandala in abuse of his office did an arbitrary act, when he directed the then acting executive director Berunado Kimeze Ssebbuggato immediately sign a contract between Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and Eutaw Construction Company before doing due diligence on it.

Birungi told the Justice Lawrence Gidudu led court that there is now sufficient evidence that the accused committed the crimes and should therefore prepare to defend themselves on causing financial loss to government and corruption.

Others accused include Apollo Ssenkeeto, Isaac Mugote, Joe Ssemugooma and Wilberforce Sekanjako among others.
