THIS WEEK: AU rocked by China spying allegations

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The African Union has been rocked by allegations that China bugged the building that houses the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The headquarters were built by China and opened in 2012.

A French newspaper, Le Monde, reported that various AU officials said data from computers in the building had been transferred every night to Chinese servers for five years. The newspaper reported that after AU discovered the bugs, it ordered for a clean sweep of the entire building. However AU Chairman Paul Kagame downplayed the incident and wondered why the continent allowed outsiders to put up the building. “We should have built it ourselves,” Kagame said.
