Uganda Rugby Cranes are Africa 7s champions

The Uganda Rugby Cranes defied the odds on Saturday when they pipped Namibia 38-19 to win the Rugby Afrique 7s tournament in Kenya.

So miraculous is the feat owing to the fact that coach Tolbert Onyango is the muscle behind the success after he invested personal finances to ensure the team’s participation.

Uganda rugby Union, unsurprisingly, contributed nothing because they are broke.

Effectively, Uganda has now qualified for the Hong Kong 7s.

Ordinarily, the 7s version of rugby is not Uganda’s strong area, but they seem to have a history worth taking note of.

Uganda featured at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 7s losing 32-0 to Canada in the Bowls Final.

Uganda now gets to rub shoulders with Kenya’s HSBC World Singapore 7s rugby champions among other elite teams of the game.
