Three children die of poison in Kumi

Mbale Regional Referral Hospital

Kumi, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Three children belonging to one family have been poisoned in an act of revenge.

The deceased have been identified as John Okodos, 9, Constantine Olupot, 6, and Ignatius Adodo,4, all children of Tom Omudu.  The incident happened in Okudumo Village, Mukongoro Sub County in Kumi district on Thursday.

It is alleged that the suspect, Hellen Adongo, was angry with Omudu when she was forced to pay five million shillings belonging to a savings group.

According to the Police, Adongo was a treasurer of the group when unknown people last year broke into her house and stole the savings. Omundu was arrested for theft after he was tracked by the police sniffer dog.

Omudu was later released, which angered Adongo who had hoped to have recovered her money from the suspect.

The Acting East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman, John Robert Tukei, says that Adongo vowed to harm Omudu or his family. He says that Adongo, who is an immediate neighbor to the family, reportedly forced the children to eat sweet potatoes which she had laced with poison, when their parents were in the garden.

According to the Police, the postmortem that was conducted by the Police Pathologist at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital indicated that some substances suspected to be poison were found in the bodies.

Adongo is on the run but her husband, Julius Okware was arrested and detained in Kumi Police Station.
