Three arrested for vandalism of railway locks

Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Three men are in police custody for theft of railway locks in Te-obia cell, Ayago ward, Lira-city East division, a kilometer away from Lira railway station.

The suspects including Emmanuel Omara, Emma Okello, and Samuel Kaka, are accused of vandalizing and stealing 342 pieces of inner and outer railway locks valued at Shillings 6.8 million, between November 6th and 7th 2022.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson said that the suspects have been charged with theft and malicious damage and their file is ready for submission.

Lawrence Egole, the Lira Resident City Commissioner accuses scrap dealers of facilitating vandalism of the railway line and other key installations.

He explained that; “we have worked very hard to fight the crime of vandalism of government installations within Lira city and the surrounding areas because we found out that these people vandalize from other districts and the vandalized equipment finds its way to Lira city.”

So far, about eight people from Lango have been arrested and produced before the Utility court in Kampala in connection to vandalizing railway lines.
