Suspected Karamojong rustler gunned down in Moroto

Mt. Moroto Region police spokesperson Micheal Longole confirmed report.

Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The joint security forces have gunned down a suspected Karamojong warrior and recovered his firearm. The incident took place at around 3am on Thursday in Nakapelimen village, Nadunget town council, Moroto district.

Micheal Longole, the Mt. Moroto Region police spokesperson says that the warrior was shot dead in a clash with the joint security forces. He says that the deceased was part of a gang of rustlers who attempted to raid animals in Nakapelimen village.

Longole says that the forces managed to recover a firearm with 06 rounds of ammunition. “As joint security forces, we encourage the community members to expose all armed criminals amidst them,” he said.

According to Longole, the security forces are currently on top of the situation in the region and warned that any rustler who tries to destabilize the peace in Karamoja will be dealt with accordingly.

Max Lokabenyan, the mayor of Nadunget town council in Moroto district has urged the locals to stop raids, saying that cattle rustling has reduced the number of Karamojong youth.

“The youth who are supposed to be leaders of tomorrow are getting finished through raids where they are killed during clashes with forces,” he said. Magdalen Nakiru, a mother and resident of Nadunget, says the insecurity in Karamoja will continue blocking the area from benefiting from government projects.

“Other people in other regions demand tractors, and seeds for agriculture while for us in Karamoja we demand more soldiers and deployment, which is so bad,” she said.
