Security guard in Jinja arrested for shooting civilian

Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in the Kiira region has arrested a security guard for allegedly shooting and injuring a 27-year-old man. The suspect whose identities have been withheld by the police is attached to Securex security company.

It is alleged that the guard shot Ivan Maali, a resident of Lubas road in Southern division, Jinja city accusing him of theft.

According to the police, the suspect stormed Maali’s house in the company of his three colleagues on Sunday night and accused Maali of masterminding night robberies within the area. It is alleged that the guard fired three live ammunition in the air before, shooting him in the left leg.

Maali was rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital emergency unit for treatment.

Maali says that thieves had attacked his neighbor Hadijah Nakayenga and he only woke up to respond to her alarm.

However, Maali says that while hunting for the suspected robbers about 15 minutes later, the security guards arrived and surrounded their area, fired live bullets at him.

Nakayenga says that her neighbors managed to scare off the suspected robbers but she was surprised to see private security guards in the area.

“The situation had normalized and the suspects had already fled, however, the guards from the neighboring building stormed our area, started firing live ammunition yet we had earlier on contacted the police,” she says.

The acting Kiira Central Police Commander, Maurice Niyonzima says that the suspect will be charged with attempted murder.
