ASP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Publicist speaking to URN during an interview

Gulu, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  Three people have been hospitalized after they were shot on Saturday night.

The injured include; Bosco Odong, 28, a resident of Arukutuma village, Lagile Parish, 16-year-old Samuel Canogura of the same area and Francis Obedgiu age 17, a resident of Palichirukee village in Awere Sub-County.

They were shot at around 7:30 pm when Corporal Godfrey Ocan, Officer in charge of Awere Police Station and Constable Paul Lukeca went to arrest Moses Okello, a UPDF officer for alleged threatening violence and attempted murder.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police says that preliminary findings indicate that upon arrival to effect the arrest of the suspect, an irate mob surrounded the police officers and started pelting stones at them.

Okema disclosed that the officers were left with no option but to defend themselves in the line of duty and fired live bullets to disperse the rowdy crowd hence injuring the trio during the ensuing scuffle.

All the wounded were evacuated and rushed to a nearby Lagile Health Centre II but Odong and Obedgiu have been referred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for better treatment since their conditions needed specialized treatment.

The case has been entered under SD 14/18/04/2020 at Awere Police Station as further police inquiries continue into the mater.
