Police arrest 3 UPDF imposters in Mbale City

Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Three Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF imposters in Mbale are in Police custody. The suspects are Calvin Oboi Deo alias Hopher, a deserter and resident of Pallisa district, Yusuf Kakala alias from Bududa district, and Paul Mwanga from Kachumbala in Bukedea district.

According to police, the suspects were picked up on a tip-off from community members who became suspicious when they saw Kakala wearing a uniform belonging to the Local Defense Unit-LDU. Upon his arrest, Kakala led police to his accomplices.

Police say the suspects are part of the “Expenders’ gang, which has been terrorizing people within and outside Mbale city. Taitika Rogers, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, says police have charged the trio with Impersonation and being in possession of government stores vide under SD. 94.31.05.22 at Mbale Central Police Station.

He explains that when police mounted a search in one of the suspect’s rooms, they recovered two more pairs of UPDF uniforms, a pair of green gumboots, a warm suit, a machete, and 10 SIM cards.
