NRM tribunal cancels former minister Jessica Alupo’s election

Jessica Alupo Epel

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  The National Resistance Movement-NRM elections tribunal has nullified the election of the former Minister of Education and Sports and Technology, Jessica Alupo Epel as the flag bearer for Katakwi District woman MP.

The declaration was made on Thursday in Kampala following a petition filed by her Violet Akurut Adome, citing voter bribery and intimidation.

Last month, the Katakwi District NRM returning officer Patrick Imeri declared Alupo winner with 38,582 against Adome 29,435 votes.

However, the tribunal has now declared Akurut the winner having garnered 39,579 votes to qualify to carry the flag of NRM in the next year election.

In a letter signed by the Deputy Chairperson NRM Electoral Commission John Kigyagi Aripa declared Akurut as duly elected NRM flag bearer for Katakwi District Woman MP.

However, Alupo says that she is returning as an Independent candidate.

This will be her second attempt to contest as an Independent having lost to Akurut in the 2016 general election.
