New Lira city council sets target to prioritize value addition on agricultural products

Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The newly constituted council of Lira City has set their target to develop marketing and value addition of agricultural products for development.

Lira, having many small scale industries and agro processing factories mostly dealing in oil seed was created as a commercial and industrial city. 

With over 50 factories, the new council believes that engaging the general community in agriculture and value addition will not only increase their income but also boost the revenue collected by the council. This they say will in turn boost service delivery.

Sam Atul, the Lira City Council Lord Mayor says they intend to engage the business community to  facilitate its development.

George Okello Ayo, the Lira City East Division Mayor said his first assignment will be to facilitate the collection of local revenue in order to improve on service delivery to the people.

Okello Ayo who had served as the vice chairperson in Lira District Council before says the current challenges like poor road network and lack of clean water can only be addressed well if the council is collecting enough revenue.

Meanwhile Hassan Moses Okeng, the deputy Speaker of Lira City East Division said they shall explore this moment to extend development to every Eastern part of the City by engaging the community they serve for equity in service delivery.
