Muntu challenges police leadership to establish attackers motive before closing outposts

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | It is a miscalculation for the police leadership to use the recent attacks on different police posts without establishing the motive set of the attackers and why they are largely concentrated in central Uganda, the former army commander and President of the Alliance for National Transformation-ANT party, Gen. Mugisha Muntu has warned.

Addressing ANT youth leaders at Sikezy hotel in Iganga district on Wednesday, Muntu argued that the police posts were designated to provide security in both the rural and densely populated parts of the country, warning overhauling them without establishing the motive of the attackers might escalate crime.

He asked the police leadership to expedite investigations to establish the motive behind the attacks. Recently, the police leadership resolved to merge 129 police posts across the country as one of the measures of cutting costs and improving efficiency, according to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

The decision was also in line with the 2019 presidential directive indicating that the lowest police unit should be at the sub-county, with each station having at least 20 police officers and two motorcycles.

The majority of the affected police posts were largely established during the reign of the former Inspector General of Police-IGP, General Edward Kale Kayihura who requested residents to provide accommodation for police posts under the community policing program.

Recently, unidentified assailants attacked Busiika police station, Luwero district where they gunned down two police officers and injured two others critically.  The third police officer succumbed to the gunshot wounds at Bombo Military hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
