MTN MoMo launches campaign to promote responsible digital borrowing

Jemima Kariuki, Chief Product Officer MTN MoMo, engages one of the Kalerwe Market vendors on the benefits of responsible borrowing and consistent repayment.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited has launched a nationwide financial literacy campaign aimed at encouraging customers to borrow responsibly, repay their digital loans on time and build stronger credit habits.

The campaign, launched in Kampala on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, is being conducted under the tagline “Borrow. Pay Back. Neela Neela.” It seeks to equip individuals, traders, agents, farmers and merchants with practical knowledge to make informed borrowing decisions through MTN MoMo Loans.

The campaign comes as digital credit continues to provide an alternative source of financing for Ugandans who may not always have full access to traditional financial institutions.

MTN MoMo officials said the campaign will focus on the benefits of responsible borrowing, including consistent repayment, maintaining a good credit record and potentially growing customers’ loan limits.

The company said customers who use MoMo Loans responsibly can improve their credit score and increase their ability to access future credit opportunities.

Jemima Kariuki, MTN MoMo Uganda’s Chief Product Officer, said access to credit should help customers and businesses create value rather than become a source of financial pressure.

“At MTN MoMo, we believe access to credit should unlock real value for the people and businesses we serve,” Kariuki said.

She said MoMo Loans give customers access to quick and convenient credit to address emergencies, meet everyday financial needs and pursue new opportunities.

For agents and merchants, she said, the loan products can provide working capital for liquidity management, stock purchases, business continuity and expansion.

“Through this campaign, we are highlighting these advantages while encouraging responsible borrowing, consistent repayment and long-term credit discipline across all our loan segments,” Kariuki said.

Accessible credit

Through its MoMo Loan Marketplace and dedicated loan segments for consumers, agents and merchants, MTN MoMo provides customers with access to digital credit through mobile money.

The products are intended to serve a range of customers, including individuals, traders, farmers, agents, merchants and micro, small and medium enterprises that may not always be adequately served by conventional financial institutions.

The new campaign seeks to ensure that greater access to digital credit is matched by greater understanding of how such credit should be used.

MTN MoMo has structured the campaign around three key messages: repay on time, borrow again and maintain a good repayment record to improve your credit score.

The company said the messages are intended to encourage customers to develop a cycle of responsible borrowing and repayment, allowing them to continue accessing the benefits of digital credit.

Nationwide reach

Over the coming months, MTN MoMo customers will receive financial education through television, radio, digital platforms, social media and community activations.

The campaign will provide practical guidance on responsible borrowing, timely repayment and the appropriate use of MoMo Loans.

MTN MoMo said the initiative forms part of its broader financial inclusion efforts in Uganda, where mobile money has expanded access to financial services for people and businesses across the country.

Beyond providing credit, the company said it wants customers to understand the responsibilities that come with borrowing and the longer-term benefits of maintaining good credit habits.

For individuals, responsible use of digital credit can help address short-term financial needs, while traders, farmers, agents and merchants can use appropriately managed credit to support working capital and business operations.

The campaign therefore positions digital credit not simply as a source of quick money, but as a financial tool whose benefits depend on disciplined borrowing and repayment.

MTN MoMo said the ultimate goal is to help more Ugandans use digital credit confidently and responsibly as they pursue financial stability, business growth and broader economic opportunities.
