Motorcyclist washed away in Luuka wetland

Luuka, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Busoga North on Thursday retrieved the body of 31-year-old Eria Waibale, a motorcyclist who was washed away in Kiroba wetland, located in Bukanga sub county, Luuka district along the Iganga-Kamuli road.

The deceased has been taken to Kiyunga health center IV mortuary, awaiting postmortem.

It is reported that Waibale was riding a motorcycle registration number UFN 613W, when he failed to keep firmly on the flooded road and was washed away in the wetland.

The chairperson of motorcyclists in Luuka district, Jaberi Nagaya, says that the roadside wetlands normally flood during heavy rains, which results into accidents due to the slippery, sloping terrain.

Meanwhile, the Busoga North police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, confirmed the incident, adding that a team of officers from the fire and rescue services department have pitched camp at the scene, with hopes of searching for possible passengers who might have been traveling with Waibale during the accident.

Kasadha further challenged road users to be cautious of speedy running water and flash floods during rainy seasons, so as to avoid the reoccurrence of similar accidents.
